Oscars 2024 Nominations

So, who’s in the running for those coveted statues this year [4]?

Oppenheimer

Leading the pack is Oppenheimer, with 13 nominations. Based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan puts his unique spin on the story. And Cillian Murphy brings the father of the atomic bomb to life in this gripping tale.

Poor Things

Close behind is Poor Things, snagging 11 nominations. The film is an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel. It follows the incredible journey of Bella Baxter, a young woman resurrected by the eccentric Dr. Godwin Baxter (played by Willem Dafoe) after taking her own life.

The plot thickens when medical student Max McCandles becomes Dr. Baxter’s assistant and falls in love with Bella, portrayed by the talented Emma Stone. Set in Victorian-era London, Bella embarks on a journey of self-discovery and sexual liberation.

Killers of the Flower Moon

Also in the running with 10 nominations is Killers of the Flower Moon, a historical crime drama that uncovers a massive conspiracy to steal oil wealth from the Osage Nation.

The screenplay is based on the 2017 non-fiction book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI and is co-written, produced, and directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese and Eric Roth. It revolves around a series of murders targeting Osage people and their relatives after oil is discovered on their land, with the events taking place in 1920s Oklahoma.

The all-star cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone.

Barbie

Of course, the Academy couldn’t overlook last year’s box office smash hit, Barbie, which earned eight nominations. Directed by Greta Gerwig and based on the screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach, it’s the first live-action Barbie movie after numerous computer-animated productions.

In the film, Barbies and Kens each have different roles in the matriarchal society of Barbieland. The movie focuses on women’s empowerment, showcasing Barbies excelling in prestigious fields like science, politics, and law.

Maestro

Maestro also has a shot at winning the Oscar with seven nominations. This biographical romantic drama explores the relationship between American composer Leonard Bernstein (played by Bradley Cooper) and his wife Felicia Montealegre (portrayed by Carey Mulligan).

American Fiction

American Fiction, a comedy-drama based on Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, scored five nominations. The impressive cast includes Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz, Adam Brody, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, and Keith David.

The story follows Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison, a writer struggling to find success because his work isn’t considered “black enough.” Frustrated, he adopts a pseudonym to write his own “black” book, which becomes a huge hit.

The Holdovers

The Holdovers is also in the running with five nominations, directed by Alexander Payne. The film stars Paul GIamatti as grumpy teacher Paul Hunnam who teaches at a New England prep school. When he is forced to stay on campus during Christmas break to supervise students, he has to face his own limitations.

Things take a turn when the cook (played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who lost her son in Vietnam, steps in. The Holdovers is a story of human connection across racial and generational divides.

Past Lives

For all you romance fans out there, you might be rooting for Past Lives, written and directed by Celine Song. This is a semi-autobiographical story that has two shots at taking home a trophy.

The plot follows two teenage classmates, Na Young and Hae Sung, who go on a date arranged by their parents before Na Young’s family relocates to Toronto. They reconnect on Facebook 12 years later in 2012, but life pulls them apart again as Na Young pursues writing in New York and Hae Sung moves to China.

Na Young gets married to Arthur, but when Hae Sung visits New York, questions arise about their past relationship.

The Zone of Interest

The Zone of Interest has five nominations. The movie is a historical drama based on Martin Amis’s 2014 novel. It depicts how Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, lives what appears to be a normal life with his family near the camp while overseeing atrocities. Höss gets promoted but struggles with guilt and increasingly detached behavior, ultimately becoming involved in the deportation of Hungarian Jews. The film illustrates how his actions continue to haunt him long after the war ends.

Anatomy of a Fall

The Academy also nominated the French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall. The film was directed by Justine Triet and co-written by Triet and Arthur Harari.

Experts describe it as an award-winning psychological thriller about a renowned writer accused of murdering her husband while staying in a chalet in the French Alps. The investigation swiftly evolves into an exploration of the inner turmoil within their troubled marriage.

In the International Feature Film category, nominated films are Io Capitano from Italy, Perfect Days from Japan, Society of The Snow from Spain, The Teachers’ Lounge from Germany, and The Zone of Interest from the United Kingdom.
